Canon Point: pre-Infinity War

Age: 40ish
Appearance: here

History: via MCU wiki
Personality:

When people first meet Doctor Stephen Strange their first impression is usually one of overwhelming arrogance. He's lofty at the best of times, generally overconfident in his good looks, skills, and his ability to quickly learn what he doesn't already know; he's less interested in people than he is in solving problems and bettering himself, which means that if his interest isn't immediately held or if he has better shit to do, he can come across as incredibly rude. It also doesn't help that owing to the esoteric nature of his life he tends to assume other people don't know what he knows, which serves to further distance him from other people and highlights a lifelong pompous streak. Stephen Strange used to know for sure that he was better than other people, and while he's been gradually humbled over time by loss and responsibility, old habits die hard.

Back in the day this arrogance also manifested in ostentatiousness: as one of the world's best brain surgeons Stephen enjoyed invites to high society, television interviews, and money that according to his ex-girlfriend went out the door as soon as it came in. One of his purchases was a very nice Lamborghini Huracán, which he totaled, along with most of his body, while trying to illegally pass someone on a cliffside highway in the rain. This accident marked the start of his journey to becoming a master of the mystic arts, but also it's probably the most damning evidence of his carelessness. Stephen loved his life, his career, and he destroyed it with impulsivity; he loved his ex-girlfriend, fellow surgeon Christine Palmer, but pushed her away after the accident by lashing out with words that he couldn't take back. The flip side of that is that he's also been reckless in studying forbidden magical practices, which later enabled him to save Earth from a destroyer of worlds. For better or worse, Stephen often shows an inability to think things through. It's a trait he's working on as someone who has been tasked with the all-important task of protecting that powerful relic, the Time Stone housed in the Eye of Agamotto.

His carelessness also manifests in a simple lack of consideration for others. Stephen is sometimes kind of a dick. He's not a super empathic person but is rather a pragmatist: while he understands what others are going through, his bedside manner in his eponymous film is a reflection of his lack of desire to connect with others and generally leaves a lot to be desired. He's curt with people, direct often to a point of tactlessness. He loved brain surgery because it made him an incredible problem solver, someone whose thirst for knowledge could be used to master the body and brain and their nuances, someone who was often needed to resolve complex issues in a pinch—not because of any particular inclination to heal or help or even be with other human beings. Surgeons are said to be control freaks, people who see the body as a puzzle to be solved, and Stephen still hasn't shaken this perspective entirely. In his prime he made friends, sure, with other doctors and high society folks and people who benefited from laughing whenever he cracked a shitty joke; but between his new responsibilities and his sense of profound loss upon becoming master of the New York Sanctum, Stephen is never in a hurry to curry anyone's favor.

Just because Stephen has withdrawn somewhat from the world of fun and making a cool six-plus figures a year doesn't mean his life is without some light and adventure, though. Stephen loves magic, that much is clear: there's wonder in his eyes when he says goodbye to his mentor, and sober but confident readiness for the unknown in his acceptance of the title of master; he's every bit as passionate about his new craft as he was about neurosurgery. He also has a strong sense of duty, not just to his deceased mentor but to the world at large, having sacrificed his life literally thousands of times (each of which he remembers) to save the planet. And finally, Stephen is a big believer in taking third options when presented with difficult choices. Even though he has to protect the Earth from mystical threats, he's committed to the vows he took as a physician and to this day refuses to take a life except when absolutely necessary. He legitimately doesn't think there's any problem he can't creatively think his way through.

Also sometimes he thinks he's funny. But that's probably for someone else to decide.

Powers and Abilities:
  • Magic - Stephen's a wizard, Harry! Stephen can harness both extradimensional and ambiguously explained internal energy by waving his hands around and thinking real hard about it. In the words of Tilda Swinton, he can use this energy to cast spells, conjure shields and weapons, and generally make magic. Stephen has demonstrated various magical abilities throughout the film canon, ranging from skills as grandiose as time manipulation to more mundane effects such as conjuring drinks. As an avid learner and someone who commits himself to mastery of all he chooses to undertake, Stephen is committed to becoming one of the best mystic arts practitioners he knows and then some. He is also stated to have tremendous latent potential, as he is capable of wielding an Infinity Stone from the jump.
  • Combat skills - Stephen's life at Kamar-Taj included combat training as a disciplinary exercise. As such, Stephen is versed in hand-to-hand combat and use of weapons. He became a fighter late in life so he has limits, but he's fit and formidable in a throwdown.
  • Photographic memory / perfect recall - Exactly what it says on the tin.
  • Trust me, I'm a doctor - Stephen has both an MD and a PhD; he has deeply advanced medical and surgical knowledge, centered on but not isolated to neurology and neuroscience, and can deploy it readily in an emergency.
